Intro:

Thermalito Afterbay is a large reservoir and part of the Oroville-Thermalito Complex (California State Water Project) located just west of Oroville, CA.

Thermalito Afterbay and nearby Black Butte Lake share similar conditions. Black Butte Lake which is located in the center of the Sacramento Valley may offer more rideable days however some of those days can be extremely windy and gusty. The Afterbay which is located on the eastern side of the valley tends to be less windy but offers friendly on-shore conditions during strong north wind events.

Season:

The Afterbay enjoys a long season due to low elevation and a reliable water source. The number of rideable days is influenced largely by the occurance of passing fronts.

Launch:

Just east of the intersection of CA Route 99 and Oroville Dam Blvd. W. on the north side of road.

Hazards:

Cold water released from Lake Oroville means some form of wetsuit is required, even on scorching hot days.
